Made in Seattle Week is a free learning festival that celebrates the best things being made in our city and the people who make them.

 

For our 3rd annual event, General Assembly Seattle gathered people from all backgrounds and industries to foster collaboration through education. Take part in a week of exciting events featuring thought leaders, innovators, and emerging tech that shape the way we work and play in Seattle. Discover how design practices change in a divisive political climate. Learn what Seattle designers can do to be more progressive.

 

In today's world, this could mean anything from simply being more conscious about the ethics of technology to revamping antiquated systems. Designers can solve problems that help to be deliberate about data privacy and recognizing bias, or designing tools to promote equity. It’s all about recognizing the impact of design: does my design work have unintended consequences? How do we become more cognizant of that?

About Jon: I’ve been in the radio industry for the last 14 years, starting in Phoenix, AZ (KEDJ) where I worked as a jack of all trades and did everything from overnights to morning show host.  My next stop was KXTE in Las Vegas as afternoon host and Music Director/Assistant Program Director.  Currently I have been serving as APD/MD/Afternoons at 107.7 The End since 2014.  I love music, I love radio, and I love tacos.

 

Jeremy Stone

CTO, Code.org

Jeremy Stone leads the engineering team at Code.org. His team is responsible for Code.org's software products including Code Studio and Hour of Code, which help bring computer science education to all schools for all kids. Code.org's software platform is used by millions of users in the U.S. and around the world. He was previously VP of Engineering at Clean Power Research where he built enterprise software products for the renewable energy industry. Prior to that, he worked at Valve building games and the Steam online service. He began his career at Microsoft where he was a founding member of the Internet Explorer team.

Jeremy is also active in the cleantech entrepreneurial community and is an early-stage startup advisor.

Linda Miller Nicholson

Salty Seattle

From The Cooking Channel to Masterchef, The Today Show to Serious Eats, Linda has made the rounds of screen, digital, and print food media, however she finds herself most at home these days behind the pasta board hand-making elaborate ravioli, tajarin, and even politically-charged pasta. She lives on the honed edge of food and art, and it's often hard to tell which way the blade has sliced. Linda believes that you eat first with your eyes, and if she had to maintain fluency in only one language, it would be pasta poetry. See her creations on Instagram @saltyseattle.

Mikhael Mei Williams

 Ms. Williams currently works for the City of Seattle Office of Film + Music where she manages the Seattle Music Commission and works to bolster the city’s creative economy. Prior to this she worked as the Director of Digital Marketing Strategy for Votiv, Inc. a Seattle based artist management and independent record label; for AEG

Live as Regional Marketing Manager where she oversaw the marketing and

promotion of all Showbox Presents club level concerts taking place in the Pacific Northwest; and as the Marketing & Communications Director for One Reel, Festivals

developing promotional strategies for Bumbershoot and the Family 4 th at Lake Union.

Andrew Lientz

SVP Engineering & Product, Smartsheet

Andrew Lientz is the senior vice president of engineering at Smartsheet. With over 20 years of experience as a leader in infrastructure, planning, and SaaS, he has been the founder of, or on the leadership team for, three successful start-ups including content delivery network EdgeCast, web analytics SaaS provider Harvest Solutions, and web development agency Zentropy. As a partner at Microsoft, Andrew led infrastructure efforts in both long range planning and internal CDN development. Andrew graduated with a B.S. from Harvey Mudd and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA. He moved to the Pacific Northwest from Los Angeles in 2012 to experience seasons, more time with his family and an opportunity to walk to work. A goal-oriented fitness enthusiast, he has run a marathon, ridden 100 miles on a bike and bench pressed 500 pounds.


Darek Mazzone

About Darek: DJ/Filmmaker/Producer/Writer/Creative Director/Party Thrower/Agitator: Over 20 years at KEXP focusing on International Music and Cultures.
In 2015/2016 I Directed a series of videos on Tech Startups in India, Nepal, China, Korea for Microsoft. Produced VR installation for at SXSW, Consultant at Creative Live Education platform. Consultant at Chef.io DevOps. Music Supervisor for a few Hotels and Fashion Brands . I once opened for Katie Perry, that was surreal. Dad, Husband, Immigrant. Pretty good cook I've been told.

Brian Court

Parter, The Miller Hull Partnership

Brian Court is an architect and partner with The Miller Hull Partnership in Seattle. Bringing a strong sense of design and a passion for buildings that are finely tuned to their regional and climatic influences, Brian has led the design of a wide variety of project types ranging from small homes to complex institutional projects. He served as the lead architect on the Bullitt Center, the largest commercial building to meet aggressive standards of the Living Building Challenge and widely considered the most energy efficient building in the U.S. Most recently he worked on a mixed-use development at Seattle's popular Pike Place Market, currently under construction. Brian was the recipient of the 2013 AIA Seattle Young Architect Award. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia with a degree in government and received a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington.

 


Jason Stratton

Executive Chef, Mamnoon

Jason Stratton has 20 years of experience working as a Chef in some of the top restaurants in Seattle. He started in the kitchen at age 16 working as a dishwasher for the "Godfather of Northwest cuisine" Bruce Naftaly where he was immersed in seasonal cooking. While applying to graduate school for poetry, he secured a Sous Chef position with Holly Smith at Cafe Juanita which sparked his long love of regional Italian cuisine. He would later helm the celebrated Spinasse in Seattle, where he was awarded "2010 Food & Wine Best New Chef" after just 6 months in the position. He went on to open Artusi, a Bon Apetít Best New Restaurant in 2012, and Aragona, a James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in 2014 before taking on his current role of General Manager and Executive Chef for Mamnoon.

Julia Hensley

Artist

Julia Hensley works at the intersection of astronomy and technology. Her current obsession with space fuels "star systems", paintings that meld formal structure with organic flow and sometimes include accompanying soundscapes. She has shown locally and nationally at numerous venues including Out of Sight Seattle, Bridge Productions, Seattle Art Museum Gallery and the Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco. Trained in painting at Boston University's School of Visual Art, she lives in Seattle where in addition to her art practice she is currently a student of UX Design.

Ryan Hilliard 

Founder, Hilliard's Beer

Ryan Hilliard founded Hilliard’s Beer in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle in October of 2011 with a focus on making great craft beer with the best available ingredients. After many years of home-brewing, success with his pale ale at GABF provided a much needed kick-start to turning the dream into reality. Being a dad, he wanted to create something close to home and easily accessible as well as widely available to those who couldn’t make it to the brewery. This thinking led to a family friendly taproom, located in the heart of Ballard. 

Charles Finkel

Founder & Owner, Pike Brewing

In 1989, Charles and Rose Ann opened Pike Brewing in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market neighborhood. Charles has worked tirelessly, day in and day out, to guide and grow Pike Brewing. He received the Brewers’ Association Recognition Award in 1988 and was described by the French Canadian Biere Magazine as “as among a dozen principals responsible for the modern renaissance of beer.” In 2006, Draft  Magazine listed him as one of the 10 Beer Innovators that had shaped the American Craft Beer renaissance. Charles was the arts curator for the Oxford Companion to Beer published by Oxford University Press in 2011. His articles and photos have appeared in a myriad of books and magazines. His beer reviews have been published in Beer Magazine monthly for more than 20 years.  He has spoken on the history of American Craft Beer at the Smithsonian, been keynote speaker at the National Homebrewers Convention and American Craft Beer Wholesaler’s Guild and has appeared in many films and TV shows about beer.


Ryan Moss

Owner & Chef, Salut

Inspired to share a sustainable food gospel while combatting the Seattle freeze, Ryan and his wife launched Salut in 2013 and was soon selling out 10-15 course plated popup dinners with drink pairings within minutes, earning five star Yelp reviews and a write up in the Sur la Table blog. He now collaborates with other area chefs and producers and with each new menu pushes himself to reimagine what can be done with food. Ryan has spent ten years in marketing and digital storytelling and as a producer and creative director in experiential advertising and now works on experimental initiatives and new media at Microsoft.

Sallyann Corn & Joe Kent

Founders, fruitsuper

fruitsuper design was founded in 2008 by Sallyann Corn and Joe Kent. Partners in business and life, Corn and Kent's collaboration is a balance of their vastly different skill sets: "she is the why, he is the how." The two met at the Art Institute of Seattle in 2002 while obtaining their first Industrial Design degrees. They continued their studies in 2006 at Pratt Institute, located in Brooklyn and known as an incubator for entrepreneurs. In 2012, fruitsuper began producing its own line of products, designing objects that are fun and made well from honest materials—all made in USA.

Dedicated to the design community, Sallyann and Joe have both served as IDSA board members, Pecha Kucha producers, Managing Members of JOIN as well as currently teach Design at Cornish College of the Arts. 

Celebrants of constraints, yet committed to fine detail, fruitsuper imbues simplicity and whimsy in all of its work.

Emily Zimmerman

Associate Curator of Programs, Henry Art Gallery

Emily Zimmerman is the Associate Curator of Programs at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. Previously she was the Associate Curator at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) where she commissioned new work from artists such as Melvin Moti, Gordon Hall, Marie Sester and curated the exhibitions Uncertain Spectator (2010) and Slow Wave: Seeing Sleep (2009). She received the 2011-2012 Loris Ledis Curatorial Fellowship at BRIC Contemporary Art and was a 2013 curator-in-residence at Residency Unlimited. Her writings have appeared in BOMB, Big, Red & Shiny and Contemporary Performance. She has served on a number of panels including the New York State Council on the Arts and the Herb Alpert Awards and is a board member for the Wave Farm (https://wavefarm.org/). She received her MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and her BA from New York University.

 

Sheryl Cababa

Associate Design Director, Artefact

Sheryl is an associate design director at Artefact, where she focuses on design research and strategy, and interaction design. Her multidisciplinary expertise stems from working at consultancies like frog and Adaptive Path, as well as technology companies like Philips and Microsoft. She has led client projects across industries from personal finance to enterprise software. Back in Seattle after a 10-year stint in The Netherlands, she brings a unique perspective on the global impact of our city.


Aseem Badshah

Aseem Badshah is the Founder and CEO of Socedo, a demand generation system that helps B2B marketers discover, engage and qualify leads through social media to increase revenue at scale. Jennifer-Navva Milliken

Curator of Craft, Bellevue Art Museum

Jennifer-Navva Milliken is Curator of Craft at Bellevue Arts Museum, where she is responsible for researching and organizing exhibitions focused on contemporary craft and design in local and international contexts. Before joining BAM, she established INTER ALIA projects, a Tel Aviv-based independent curatorial practice dedicated to serving an interdisciplinary arts agenda. She has participated on the creative teams of a number of cultural institutions and museums, including the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York, and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and has written and spoken on contemporary art, craft, and design topics for a number of international publications and venues.

Frank Strack

Solutions Executive, TEKsystems

Frank Strack of TEKsystems has solved his client’s critical technology and business problems through the innovative application of technology for over 20 years. Frank’s specialty and passion lies within Internet application architecture and development. His contributions dating back to the Dot Com era in the late nineties and early 2000’s have won

numerous awards for revolutionary User Experience design. His extensive expertise in software development as well as application, systems and solutions architecture has brought Frank’s focus to synergizing the human and technology components of business solutions for Fortune

500 corporations across a broad range of industries including Telecommunications, Software

Matt Lincecum

Founder & Brewer, Fremont Brewing Company

Matt started Fremont Brewing in 2008 after spending many years as an attorney representing breweries, wineries and restaurants, such as Pyramid Brewing, Novelty Hill Winery and Tilth Restaurant. During this time, Matt acquired invaluable experience in conceptualizing, licensing, and developing successful hospitality companies. Matt was a homebrewer for more than 15 years during which time he developed the recipes that forms the foundation of Fremont Brewing beer offerings. Fremont has won GABF, ABA, WBC awards and is currently one of the top 100 regional breweries in the US.

George Perantatos

Lead Product Manager, Redfin

George Perantatos has been a part of Seattle's tech scene for 15 years. He is currently a lead product manager at Redfin. His team builds products that make selling a home easy and efficient for both agents and homeowners. Before Redfin, George was at Amazon where he ran the beta, built apps, and managed press-event demos for the Fire Phone. Before Amazon, George was at Microsoft where he worked on Xbox, Office Labs, and SharePoint. George received a Bachelor's in Computer Science from Georgia Tech. Minh Nguyen

Artist

Minh Nguyen is an organizer of events and exhibitions who is interested in cultural studies, the role of design and urban planning in the creation of equitable spaces, and collective protest. Her current projects include organizing Chat Room, a discussion series on how the Internet has changed art, co-organizing Seattle Design Festival, and co-curating Out of Sight, an annual survey of art from the Pacific Northwest. She was born in Vietnam..
